No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
