Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
