The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility.
